If you’ve never heard of a prison spread, you’re about to discover one of the most creative food traditions in America. Inmates take basic commissary items — ramen noodles, chips, cheese, hot sauce — crush everything up in a bag, add hot water, and let it cook into this dense, savory, surprisingly delicious meal. It’s resourceful cooking at its finest.
The classic spread is where it all starts. Ramen noodles form the base, crushed Cheetos or Doritos add crunch and flavor, squeezable cheese brings the creaminess, and hot sauce ties it all together. You mix it in the bag, wrap it up tight, and let the hot water do the work. The result is a thick, cheesy, spicy mixture that’s become iconic. This version uses easy-to-find grocery store ingredients so you can make it at home.

The Classic Prison Ramen Spread
Ingredients
Method
- Crush the ramen noodles inside their wrappers until broken into small pieces. Open and dump into a large zip-lock bag or clean chip bag.
- Crush the Flamin' Hot Cheetos and corn chips and add them to the bag with the ramen.
- Dice the summer sausage into small cubes and add to the bag.
- Sprinkle in the ramen seasoning packets and add the hot sauce.
- Pour hot water into the bag — just enough to barely cover everything. Don't flood it, you want it thick.
- Squeeze out the excess air and seal the bag tightly.
- Wrap the bag in a towel to hold in the heat. Let it sit for 12-15 minutes.
- Unwrap, squeeze lines of cheese over the top, mix it all together.
- Eat straight from the bag or spread onto a tray. Best enjoyed immediately while hot.
