Ingredients
Method
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick slices.
- Toss the apple slices with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour in a large bowl.
- Spread the apples evenly in a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the crumble.
- Add the cold cubed butter and work it in with your fingers until you have rough, clumpy crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter.
- Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before serving warm with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor — Granny Smith for tartness, Honeycrisp for sweetness. Don't skimp on the butter in the crumble topping — that's what makes it crispy and golden. The lemon juice prevents the apples from browning and adds a subtle brightness. This is even better the next day reheated in the oven at 350°F for 10 minutes.
