Nutella Banana Milkshake

Nutella and bananas are one of those combinations that should be illegal because of how good it is. This milkshake takes two of the best flavors on the planet and blends them into a thick, creamy, chocolatey-hazelnut dream that tastes like a dessert from a Parisian creperie.

The frozen banana is the key here — it makes the milkshake incredibly thick and creamy without watering it down like ice cubes would. And when that frozen banana hits the Nutella and chocolate ice cream in the blender, it creates this velvety, pudding-like consistency that coats your straw in the best way possible. I always keep peeled bananas in my freezer specifically for this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas, frozen and sliced
  • 3 cups chocolate ice cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons Nutella
  • 1/2 cup whipped cream
  • 2 tablespoons chopped hazelnuts
  • Nutella for glass drizzle
  • 1 fresh banana slice for garnish

Method

  1. Peel and slice the bananas the night before and freeze in a zip-lock bag.
  2. Spread a thin layer of Nutella around the inside walls of two tall glasses using the back of a spoon.
  3. Add the frozen banana slices, chocolate ice cream, milk, and Nutella to a blender.
  4. Blend until thick and smooth, about 20-30 seconds. The frozen banana makes it extra thick.
  5. Pour into the Nutella-lined glasses.
  6. Top with whipped cream and drizzle extra Nutella over the cream.
  7. Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts over the top.
  8. Garnish with a fresh banana slice on the rim and serve immediately with a thick straw.

Notes

The riper the banana, the sweeter and more flavorful your milkshake will be — use bananas with lots of brown spots. Frozen bananas make the shake thick without needing as much ice cream. If you don't have Nutella, any chocolate hazelnut spread works. For an adult version, add a shot of Frangelico hazelnut liqueur.
