White vinegar cleaning hacks, baking soda and vinegar cleaning hacks, lemon, and castile soap are each proven to kill bacteria, cut grease, lift stains, and deodorize. Here are five recipes that cover every surface in your home.
What You’ll Need to Get Started
A set of glass spray bottles is the right choice for anything vinegar-based — vinegar can degrade plastic over time. For storing dry powders, amber glass storage jars protect contents from light. For application, microfiber towels outperform paper towels. And the single most versatile ingredient you can own is Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap — a concentrated, plant-based soap with dozens of household applications.
Recipe 1: The All-Purpose Spray
Replaces: multi-surface cleaners, general disinfecting sprays

In a glass spray bottle: 1 cup white distilled vinegar, 1 cup water, 15 drops tea tree oil, 10 drops lavender or lemon essential oil. Shake before each use. Use on: kitchen counters, stovetop (once cool), appliance exteriors, bathroom counters, cabinet fronts, light switches. Never use on: marble, granite, travertine, cast iron, or unfinished wood.
Recipe 2: The Soft Scrub
Replaces: Comet, tub-and-tile scrubs, powder cleansers

In an amber glass jar: 1 cup baking soda cleaning powder, ¼ cup Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap, 10 drops lemon essential oil, water to thin if needed. Stir to a thick paste. Use on: bathroom sinks, bathtubs, tile grout, toilet bowls, kitchen sinks (including stainless steel). Never use on: glass cooktops, polished wood, or inside a washing machine drum.
Recipe 3: The Glass and Mirror Cleaner
Replaces: Windex and every ammonia-based glass cleaner
In a glass spray bottle: 2 cups water, ½ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl). The alcohol evaporates quickly to prevent streaks. Use on: windows, mirrors, glass shower doors, stainless steel appliance fronts. Never use on: tinted car windows or electronic screens.
Recipe 4: The Drain Freshener
Replaces: chemical drain deodorizers and enzyme packets
Make fresh each time: pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain, follow immediately with ½ cup white vinegar. The fizzing acid-base reaction breaks up soap scum and buildup. Let sit 15 minutes, then flush with a full kettle of boiling water. Once monthly for maintenance. Important: do not use if you have recently used a commercial chemical drain cleaner.
Recipe 5: The Heavy-Duty Floor Cleaner
Replaces: Swiffer WetJet solution, commercial laminate and tile cleaners
In a bucket: 1 gallon warm water, ½ cup white vinegar, 5–10 drops essential oil. For greasy tile, add 1 tablespoon Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap. Apply with a well-wrung mop — floors should be damp, not soaking. Never use on: natural stone tile, polished marble, or unsealed hardwood.
